Two teams got close.

498

England v Netherlands

The highest total in men's one-day international history. Buttler made 162 from 70 balls. They finished two short and nobody has been closer since.

Amstelveen, 2022

438

South Africa v Australia

The highest successful chase ever made, and still the most famous one-day match played. Sixty-two short of what this game asks.

500

What you are chasing

Ten an over for fifty overs. No passengers, no weak links, and a tail that has to be as iconic as the top order.

Never posted, never chased

Eleven picks.
No undos.

Spin

The wheel lands on one real World Cup squad. West Indies 1979. Pakistan 1992. India 2011. On Classic you get one free re-roll and another for watching a short ad. Starting again costs nothing.

Draft

Take one player and place him where he actually batted. Viv Richards will not open. Muralitharan will not come in at four. Once a player is taken, he is gone.

Chase

Fifty overs, ball by ball, with a live score and commentary. At the end, a full scorecard and an honest verdict.

1–7, the BattingPower & Bowling: the best in your XI

Every player carries three ratings.

BAT

Survival

How long a batsman stays in. Average, temperament, and the ability to bat through fifty overs instead of playing a cameo. A chase this size is built on hitting centuries.

POW

Scoring

Strike rate and acceleration. How often he clears the rope, and how quickly he shifts through the gears. You cannot chase 500 by rotating the strike.

BWL

Morale

The bowlers might have conceded 500, but they still have a role in the chase. Your four best bowlers, wherever they bat, are the icons in the dugout who create momentum and lift the morale to get the side over the line. Records are not broken without a completely elite, balanced lineup.

FAQs

Completely. No download. Open the page and play.

Can you actually chase 500?

Yes, and it is meant to be rare. You need genuine class in the top seven, real firepower to clear the rope, and four iconic bowlers. Most sides fall short, and the ones who get there are written into the history books.

Why did my brilliant team lose?

Almost always the bowling or the big hitting. People build a top seven of legends and forget the rest of the side, but your Power is your seven biggest hitters and your Bowling is your four best bowlers, counted across the whole XI. A side with no real attack or no firepower drains a chase even when the batting is immaculate.

Where do the ratings come from?

Every card is that player at that World Cup, so Kohli 2011 and Kohli 2023 are different cards. Batting is anchored to his ODI batting average, Power to his strike rate, and Bowling to his bowling average and economy, all from around that tournament. On top of the numbers sits a weighting for how iconic he was in that shirt, so the legends of each World Cup get their due.

Does it matter where each player bats?

For Batting, yes: only your top seven (1 to 7) count towards your Batting. Power and Bowling are judged across the whole XI. Your seven biggest hitters make up your Power and your four best bowlers make up your Bowling, wherever they bat. A big hitter in the tail still counts, and a bowling all-rounder up the order does too.

What are the wicketkeeper and captain for?

A line-up doesn't exist without a wicketkeeper, and a chase like this isn't complete without the leadership of a good captain. Missing one isn't make or break, but it does cost you a small penalty in the chase.

Why can't I put a player wherever I want?

Every player can only bat where he actually batted. Viv Richards will not open, Muralitharan will not come in at four, and Glenn Maxwell will not bat eleven. It keeps every side you build a believable cricket team.

What is the Honours Board?

Lord's 500, the game's own honours board, where everyone who chases it down is etched. Boards run for the fastest chase today, this week and all time, plus the most 500s landed. The names from the open beta, before the game relaunched with real World Cup squads, are kept in its archive.

Is this affiliated with any board or competition?

No. It is an independent fan-made game, not connected to any cricket board, competition, club or player.

Who made this

Made by a cricket fan in Australia, with an unreasonable affection for the legends of the game.

Football had 38-0. Basketball had 82-0. Cricket didn't have one, so I built it: a way to chase something impossible with the players you always wished had played together. It's an excuse to put Sachin and Viv in the same top order, and Wasim and Marshall on the same new ball.

Every player is researched on averages, strike rates and the record, then weighed against how iconic he was in that shirt.
